On this site you will find information about most of the major wildlife reserves in Southern Africa. I've tried to include useful information for people who are planning a trip to Africa, and for photographers. On this website you'll find lots of information and pictures from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. Parks covered on this website include the Kruger National Park, Hluhluwe - Imfolozi, Addo Elephant NP, Mountain Zebra NP, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, West-Coast National Park, Sabi Sands Game Reserve, Timbavati Game Reserve, Sossusvlei, Victoria Falls, Nxai Pan NP, Savuti, Chobe, Moremi, Linyanti, the Okavango Delta, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Etosha.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park - July 2011

I've uploaded images from my July 2011 trip tot the Kgalagadi. This was my first trip to the Kgalagadi in the winter months. Temperatures at night went down to a minimum of -8 degrees centigrade and during the day it warmed up to about 26 degrees. Sightings during this trip were not as good as I'm used to in the winter months. I think a lot of the animals spend the nights in the dunes as the night temperatures in the dunes are a bit higher than in the riverbeds. Despite this I still saw lion, leopard, cheetah and brown hyaena though this trip so I guess I can't really complain.

Farne Island (United Kingdom) - May 2011

I normally only take wildlife images in Africa but one thing had been on my bucket list for years and years now and that was photographing Atlantic Puffins on the Farne Islands. Last May I got the chance to include a visit to the Farne Islands in a trip to the North of England so I didn's hesitate for a moment and booked two full day tours. After wanting to go for so many years I was not disappointed; the Farne Island are an awesome place for photograpy. From April till August the islands are host to huge breeding colonies of Atlantic Puffins, Arctic, Common and Sandwich terns, Razorbills and guillemots, Eider ducks, Shags and Oystercatchers and the photographic opportunities are almost limitless. I shot over 4000 images in two days, most of them attempting (and succeeding) to photograph puffins in flight, so bring lots of memory when you're planning to go there. You can find some of the images I shot at the Farne Islands here.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park - October 2010

I've uploaded three separate image galleries with images from my trip to the Kgalagadi. The image galleries are general wildlife, cheetahs and meerkats. I decided to make separate galleries for cheetah and meerkat sightings because I shot so many good images of them during this trip. With regards to cheetah sightings this trip was by far the best of all my trips to the Kgalagadi. In a five day period I saw sixteen different cheetahs and had close to twenty cheetah sightings in the area from 13th Borehole to Dalkeith waterhole.I witnessed cheetah hunt unsuccesfully three times and also found them on a kill three times.

Outdoorphoto Photo Safari - October 2010

In October 2010 I joined a photographic safari which was being hosted by Outdoorphoto at Elephant Plains Game Lodge in the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve. I've visited this particular lodge many times in the last couple of years as this in my opinion is the best place in Southern Africa to photograph leopards. During  this four day photo safari I wasn't disappointed in this respect as we had plenty of excellent leopard sightings. In the last 32 drives at Elephant Plains I've seen one or more leopards on 30 of those drives. I don't think there are many lodges in Africa that can match such consistency in leopard sightings.

Although the leopard sightings were excellent we struggled a bit with species diversity. We didn't see any other cats and general game was also a bit scarce. The day before the photo safari started there had been excellent sightings of wild dogs which just shows that you can never predict what the bush has in store for you. Check this gallery to see some of the images I shot during the safari.

Kruger National Park - October 2010

On my way to the Outdoorphoto photo safari at Elephant Plains Game Lodge I spent (just) two days in the Kruger National Park. You can find some of the pictures which I shot in Kruger here

Whale watching - October 2010

In October 2010 I went on a four week trip to South Africa. During this trip I visited the Kruger National Park, Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and the Cape Town area. It has taken me far too long to publish images from this trip so with my apologies for the delay here is the first installment of images. One of my objectives for this trip was to get some good shots of Southern Right Whales which frequent the South African coast from around July untill December. The best place to see the whales is in the area of the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy. The best places for whale viewing in this area are Hermanus and Gansbaai. The town of Hermanus is usually very busy as most tourists who do daytrips from Cape Town to watch the whales are brought to Hermanus. Gansbaai is on the other side of the bay and is much quieter than Hermanus. Both towns offer excellent whale viewing.

All of the images in this gallery were made around the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy in South Africa. Most of the jumping whales were photographed at Hermanus.

Canon Professional Network - Editor's Choice

Editor’s Choice is a unique, interactive CPN feature that allows Canon photographers from all corners of the earth to submit their images for review and appraisal by some of the world’s top photo editors. In November 2010 the theme was 'Wildlife and nature' so photographers could enter any wildlife and nature images provided that they had been made using Canon equipment. Out of thousands of entries from all over the world Tim Harris from Nature Picture Library/Bluegreen Pictures has selected his forty favourite nature and wildlife images.I was notified today that one of my images was selected as Editor’s Choice.

The best of Outdoorphoto - Portfolio 1

I received my copy of the Outdoorphoto photo book today. This book, the first in an annual series, shows a selection of the images from photographers who publish pictures on the Outdoorphoto community website forum. This forum boasts more than 18,000 registered members and over 100,000 images. The book 'The best of Outdoorphoto - Portfolio 1' contains a selection of nature images from fifty of the most viewed members.

The initial selections were made from a few thousand images which was reduced to about 2,000 images which was reduced to about 900 images by contacting the members to try and get hold of the full rez imaging as well as the stories behind the shots. Members that did not respond were culled. Images that were too severely cropped or damaged by photoshop were culled.
In the end a bit over 500 images were sent to the designers that did the final selections according to the layout of the book (about 160)

SANParks Photographic Awards 2010

Every year SANParks organises a photographic competition for amateur photographers. The competition is divided in eleven categories for DSLR and compact cameras. Images entered in this competition must be made in parks managed by SANParks. I entered a couple of images this year and reached the final selection of the DSLR - Animals and Insects category with an image of a Black-backed Jackal which I took during a trip to Mountain Zebra National Park in April 2009.

Today I received word that my image is the winner in its category.

Africa Photographic Awards 2010

I made it into the final of the Wildlife Behaviour category of the Africa Photographic Awards 2010 with a black & white image of elephants. I didn't win anything but making it into the final selection of a wildlife category in the biggest photographic competition in the world is an honour in itself so I'm not complaining.
