Showercap as dust protection on a 300 f/2.8 IS LWhen I drive through parks I always leave my windows open so I can hear for instance impala or baboon alarm calls. This has helped me in finding a number of good sightings, but there is a down side to driving with your windows open and that problem is.....dust (and lots of it). In Africa the only stable factor seems to be the dust, it is ever present in the parks. This means that one of the concerns of a photographer is to protect the photo gear from the dust as best as possible.

My brother has found a very easy and incredibly cheap option for protecting cameras and lenses from the dust. The solution is...don't laugh....shower caps. After having used them to protect my camera on a trip to the Kgalagadi in Otober 2007 they have become a standard part of my equipment. I now carry four or five of them with me. The way you use them is incredibly easy. I use shower caps that have two layers of material joined together, waterproof plastic on the inside and fabric on the outside. I turn them inside out, so fabric facing inward, and then place them over the end of my telelens and camera. Because shower caps have an elastic band they fit snugly over the camera and lens and are thus excellent dust covers. They can be removed quickly, are cheap and you can buy them anywhere. In my opinion they are the ultimate dust covers.
