Sabi Sand - Djuma Game Reserve
Djuma Game Reserve is part of the world famous Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve in South Africa. Djuma Game Reserve is situated in the northern part of the Sabi Sands. This reserve borders on the Kruger National Park and offers guests the choice of three luxury lodges: from the magnificent Bush Lodge to the unique new Vuyatela. There is no dividing fence between the two reserves and therefore Djuma's 9000 ha is part of the vast Kruger National Park ecosystem. Djuma is the third largest land user in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and has a low density of vehicles. You will never feel crowded at Djuma whether at the lodge or on your game drive. When we went on game drives there were a maximum of three game drive vehicles at a sighting, and on some sightings only two vehicles at a time were allowed.
When I went to Djuma in July 2002 I stayed at Vuyatela Game Lodge. This lodge is was build fairly recently, I think it was 1999. Vuyatela is the most exlusive lodge in Djuma, but when you're there it it doesn't feel like a very exclusive lodge. There are only eight chalets, or khayas, in the camp so it will never be crowded there. As Djuma is a private game lodge you are not allowed to do self drive safaris like you would in the national parks. When you stay at Vuyatela two game drives, a morning drive and an evening drive, will be included in your stay. These drives are conducted in open game drive vehicles that will accommodate around nine people. The fun part about these drives is that they can (and will) drive off-road, a thing that you can not do in a national park. Because you can drive off-road there you are likely to see more wildlife and get closer to it.
