Kruger National Park - Restcamps (Lower Sabie)
The restcamp is situated on the bank of a dam in the Sabie River in the southern part of the Kruger National Park. With its large lawns and shade trees this camp is a very popular family destination. Owing to the abundant foliage and waterholes in the area, game abounds here. At another small dam situated only one kilometer from the camp, crocodile, hippo and various species of birds can be sighted. Accommodation comprises five-bed cottages, luxury two/three-bed huts and basic two/three/five-bed huts.
This was one of my favorite restcamps in the park. This was a relatively old camp with limited capacity. Unfortunately tourism takes its toll and lately Lower Sabie has been extended. A new reception, restaurant and shop has been build and the camping grounds have been extended. Although the camp has improved dramtically it takes away some of the special athmosphere that Lower Sabie always had.
The huts with a riverview in Lower Sabie are stunning. If you'd like tyo stay in Lower Sabie try to get one of these huts. A lot of wildlife can be found around the camp. At night it's well worth having a stroll past the fence because hyenas are often seen patrolling the fence. The camp is situated perfectly in the park because it's situated almost at the border with Mozambique in the East. This means that when you go for an early-morningdrive you'll have to drive to the west, and thus have the sun in your back. In the afternoon when you return to the camp you'll once again have the sun in your back because it will be setting in the west. I've stayed in camps in the west of the park, like Pretoriuskop, and I can tell you that it's no fun having the sun directly in front of you. Having the sun in front of you can sometimes make photography near impossible.
