Mopani entrance gateSituated 45 km north of Letaba Restcamp on the eastern bank of the Pioneer Dam lies Mopani Restcamp. The nearest gate is the Phalaborwa Gate - 74 km away. The accommodation units have been built from natural materials such as rough stone, wood and thatching grass and blend in beautifully with the environment. Accommodation consists of six-bed cottages, and two-plus-two-bed huts.

Mopani is situated in the north of the Kruger Park on the border of the pioneer dam. In a way this camp is very unlike all the other camps in the Kruger Park. One the one hand there is a restaurant and some cottages that have a spectacular view over the dam, and on the other hand there are the 'normal' huts which seem to have been build in the middle of a desert. I say desert because they seem to be build in a huge area without any trees or plants. It's certainly one of the most unattractive camps to stay in if you're staying in one of those huts. If you're however lucky enough to be staying in a cottage overseeing the dam then this is by far the most beautiful spot to stay in in the Kruger National Park. It's well worth the money. I can't say a lot about the animals in the area because when I stayed in Mopani there had been huge bush fires so the whole area had been burned down and the animals had relocated to greener pastures.

Things to seek in the Mopani area

  • Hippopotamus
  • Waterbuck
  • Tsessebe
  • African Fish Eagle
  • Lion
