Grootkolk is an unfenced wilderness camp in the northernmost area of the park. Grootkolk is located about 100km North of Nossob restcamp and 30km south of Unions End. The camp is not fenced and for your safety a ranger is permanently based at Grootkolk. Electricity is provided by sunpanels hooked to some batteries. I expected the electricity to go off at 23:00am because that happens at a number of camps, but to my surprise the power stayed on for the whole night. Grootkolk doesn't have a shop or petrol station so make sure you fill up your car at Nossob before driving to Grootkolk and make sure you take some food with you. The most important think to remember when going to Grootkolk however is to take drinking water with you. The water at Grootkolk is not suitable for human consumption so take plenty of bottled water with you.

My opinion

In my opinion this is one of the best camp I've stayed in in the Kgalagadi. I love to go to places where you're not surrounded by tourists and because Grootkolk only accommodates a maximum of eight people it's unlikely that'll happen there. Also I love the fact that the camp is not fenced. Another big advantage Grootkolk has is that it's located some 100km from the nearest restcamp. This means that when you head out for an early morning drive you won't see any other tourists for hours. I booked three days at Grootkolk not knowing what to expect there. When you go out for a drive at Grootkolk you can only go North towards Unions End or South towards Nossob. After three days you can get bored with driving the same road over and over again so in retrospect I think a three day stay is about right.

Facilities

The camp has it's own waterhole which you can see from your cabin. Unfortunately the waterhole is not floodlit so you probably won't be able to see many animals at the waterhole. When we stayed there we saw some kuddu drinking water and about two hours before we arrived a leopard was seen drinking at the waterhole.
