Camping

Xakanaxa (pronounced Ka-ka-na-ka) campsite is an awesome place to stay and it is my favourite campsite in Moremi. Eight (very) vaguely marked sites blend into one long camping area, which stretches along this tip of the Mopane Tongue. Facilities are very limited, with basic toilets and showers, plus water taps dotted around the sites, their knobs encased in huge slabs of concrete to protect them from the elephants who love clean water. As with Third Bridge, this is an area of particularly dense game, so always remain vigilant as you move about the campsite, making sure that you keep your eyes out for animals at all times.

Game viewing

The Xakanaxa area offers some of the best scenery and wildlife available in Moremi. Game in the area includes just about everything imaginable and game to be seen on the game drives include tsessebe, lechwe, wildebeest, impala, waterbuck, elephant, sable and giraffe. The predators are prevalent and lion are often heard calling in the early morning. Leopard, wild dog and hyena are often sighted. Birding in the area is excellent, especially in the spring and summer months when the migrants are breeding. To the north are the world-famous heronries which attract large numbers of breeding storks and herons.

Road conditions

The roads in the Xakanaxa area can be very sandy in places and as is the case with all the roads in Moremi you'll need a 4x4. The road network in Moremi is extensive and proper paper maps do not exists. Bring a GPS with the Tracks4Africa maps installed to Moremi to prevent getting lost.

Fuel, food and water

As is the case with all the campsites in Moremi you can't buy any fuel or food in or near the campsite as there are no shops. There are several water taps dotted around the sites but I wouldn't recommend this as drinking water. Bring your own fuel, food and drinking water when staying in Moremi.
