Nxai Pan campsiteThe DWNP runs one campsite in Nxai Pan National Park; South Camp. This camp is accessible by four wheel drive only. South Camp is about 1.5km east of the Park Headquarters and entrance gate. Facilities at South Camp are very basic. The ablutions offer sit-down flush toilets, showers and running (non drinkable) cold water. The campsites all have a braai pit and a water point (once again non drinkable). Firewood is scarce in Nxai Pan so it's probably a good plan to bring your own firewood.

The ablutions are very basic, but relatively clean. For warm water you need to light the donkey boiler. When I was in South Camp in October 2008 new ablution blocks were being build. These ablution blocks had solar pannels installed so I think that they will offer running cold and warm water in the future. In the dry period South Camp has an elephant issue. Elephants will come into camp and they will try to drink water at the ablutions. The old ablutions building is surrounded by an elephant barrier (sharp stones set in concrete) but the elephants will walk over these sharp stones to get at the water at the ablutions. The new ablutions building were being surrounded by a new kind of anti-elephant barrier but I'm not convinced that this new barrier will work. The elephants are not aggressive though so if you keep a safe distance you should be fine.

The waterpoints at the campsites attract a variety of birds during the day. If you're a birder then make sure that there is a little puddle of water next to the waterpoint as you'll be entertained by birds for most of the day then.

At the time of writing this article the bookings for this campsite are being handled by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP). This will most probably change in the near future though as DWNP is outsourcing the management of campgrounds. Check this article for more information.
