Aire del Mar guesthouse is located about 150 kilometres east of Capetown in the town of Kleinnaai. It's ideally situated to see the great white sharks and whales. All the shark boats leave from Kleinbaai harbour which is just down the road from the guesthouse. All the spacious en suite bedrooms offer panoramic sea views so if you're lucky you might even see whales from the comfort of your own room.

Day trips

Roelof Diener, a registered tour guide and owner of Aire del Mar, will gladly assist you in planning day trips in the area. When my wife and I were there in March 2003 Roelof took us on a number of daytrips around the Overberg area. We did some wine tasting at a new local wine estate which produces excellent red whines. On the same day we did some beer tasing at Birkenhead brewery ('The beer from here') followed that by a lunch at Birkenhead and then went to do some cheese tasting. On another trip we went to The Hoop Coastal Reserve. This is a stunningly beautifull reserve. We arrived at The Hoop when the tide was low so we could walk through the various tidal pools which had all kinds of marine life in them. The Hoop reserve is one of the places where you will find the African Black Oyster Catcher. This is the only species of oystercatcher which breeds in Africa and is highly endagered.
On another trip we went to Cape Agulhas which is the Southernmost tip of Africa and this iswhere the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet (and not at the Cape of Good Hope as all the tourists are led to believe).
