Whale watching at the KeldersWhale watching is a must and simply impossible to avoid. During whale watching season, which is from roughly July till December, the whole Overberg coastline is heavily populated with Southern Right Whales and Hump Back Whales. This beautiful coastline is so blessed with the shear numbers of Whales that come to the area that it has been renamed the Whale Coast. On the other side of Hermanus and Walker Bay stands Gansbaai and De Kelders. De Kelders is a hidden gem, not well known to the hoards of tourists that visit the area yearly. From my own experience I can say that De Kelders are probably the best place in South Africa, and maybe the whole world, to watch whales. At De Kelders you can relax and break away from the crowds and the commercial side of tourism and spend personal one on one time with a whale. I've literally been so close to three whales at De Kelders that when the whales blowed the spray almost reached me. In my opinion De Kelders is a better place for whale watching then Hermanus, the self proclaimed "whale capital of the world".
